The cause of his death was Cardiovascular Disease.161

Death Notes:
William's obituary published in the Wisconsin Leader-Times from Eau Claire, Wisconsin on Saturday, February 8, 1930 stated that he was survived by one brother and three sisters. The one brother was probably Lester, who later died in 1932, but Luke died sometime about 1930, so that means Luke probably died before William. Two of the three sisters that were still surviving would work out to be Eunice, who died only 4 months later in 1930, and Susanna who died in 1959. The only other sister that could possibly be alive in 1930 would have to be Mary Alice Lightfoot.

Burial Notes:
Because of his Civil War Military record, an application was made and approved for a government furnished military headstone. The application was made by Charles Lightfoot, son of William, on 7 Apr 1930 the date on which William was buried. It was approved by the War Department on 23 May 1930, ordered from the supplier in Lee, Massachusetts, and shipped to Forest Hill Cemetery on 18 Aug 1930.

1930: The "Record of Funeral" from Lenmarks' Funeral Home indicates the following:
Place of Death: res [this probably means "residence"]
Date of Funeral: February 8, 1930
Time of Funeral Service: 2 PM
?man: Rev. Charles Buetcher [illegible printing before the letters "man"; perhaps "Preacherman"?]
Attending Physician: Dr. Mitchell
Cause of Death: cardiovascular disease
Occupation: Steam Engineer at Saw Mill
Date of Birth: September 1, 1846
Name of Father: Daniel Lightfoot
Birthplace: England
Name of Mother: Susanna Arnsberger
Birthplace: USA
Burial was at Forest Hill Cemetery, "single graves, Lot No. G???d 10 in Section "D"
Total cost of the funeral services was $193.00

The total charges of $193.00 apparently paid by his wife, Loretta. The date of the funeral was February 8, 1930 and interment was April 7, 1930 nearly one month later. The ground was probably frozen solid so the actual interment had to wait until a thaw occurred. The Certificate of Death incorrectly indicates that the date of burial on February 8, 1930.

Grave location is noted as "Single Graves (G????10), Section D". The word(s) after Single Graves is indecipherable. The "Grave No. is left blank.

General Notes:
While he was in the Civil War, William wrote at least one lengthy letter to his older sister, Elizabeth, describing his day to day duties in the army. The letters are from "Camp Lookout", Tennessee. William describes the action near Nashville and other areas near that location.

The following is from "Cedar Chronicles 1836-1996" by Donald & Dorothy Stout:

"J.P. Stotler of Iowa township, on May 3, 1894, suffered a severe loss in his horse herd. Twelve were poisoned and seven of them died. This all happened one night. The next day he examined the feed boxes and found evidence of strychnine mixed with the salt. His loss totaled $2,250.00 for some were stallions, another a prized racehorse. A man named William Lightfoot was arrested on the basis of a sworn information. He denied the guilt and his friends raised $300.00 to get him out on bond. A hearing was scheduled later."
----------------------------------------

The mystery surrounding the series of horse poisonings which occurred in Cedar county a few years ago is about to be cleared up. Dan Doty was arrested at Enid, Okla., and has made a partial confession. It will be remembered that thirteen valuable horses were poisoned and one man, Wm. Lightfoot served a jail sentence of several months for complicity. The case attracted much attention here at the time, many of the parties being well known.

NOTE - Daniel Doty was married to Vietta Wymer, a niece of William Lightfoot.

NOTE - It is interesting to note that his parents were shown in the 1870 Census to still live in nearby Cedar County, but at the age of 24, William was out working on his own in Muscatine County. The physical distance was not too far apart because William apparently met Loretta Linn in nearby Cedar County where they were married sometime around 1875.

The Social Security application by her son, Lee Lightfoot, shows that he entered his mother's name spelled "Loritta" but he was a bad speller and the correct spelling is "Loretta" as she frequently used it or "Lorette" as her birth given name.

After William died in 1930, Loretta stayed in the Eau Claire, Wisconsin area until July 11, 1944 when she entered into the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, Waupaca County, Wisconsin where she remained until her death on January 19, 1946.

The following land records were sent to me by Yvonne Linn. There are a multitude of land transaction records on file in Cedar County, Iowa involving land bought in the name of Loretta Lightfoot and all dated after the birth of her youngest son. I'm not sure whether these records show that the property was in her name only or perhaps only indicate her name as being on the deed along with the name of her husband. Equally puzzling is the transaction in which land was exchanged between she and her husband on October 22, 1892. The set of numbers at the end of each line may indicate a book and page number but I'm not positive. I'm also not positive which party of each transaction is the buyer and seller.

The register of Baptisms gives his birth date as something that is different from what family records show, 1 May 1836 instead of Jul 1835. It also gives his baptism date as 13 Oct 1836.

This record is considered insufficient evidence for proof that this is the correct person especially considering the surname McLaughlin was very common in Philadelphia.

General Notes:
Brief Life History of John McLaughlin

When John McLaughlin was born in July 1835, in Pennsylvania, United States, his father, James McLaughlin, was 20 and his mother, Elizabeth Smith, was 22. He married Jane Davis on 22 May 1882, in Rains, Texas, United States. They were the parents of at least 1 son and 2 daughters. He lived in West Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States in 1850. He died on 31 December 1921, in Iowa City, Johnson, Iowa, United States, at the age of 86, and was buried in Oakland Cemetery, Iowa City, Johnson, Iowa, United States.
--------------------------------------

It is interesting to note that the census records indicates that both John McLaughlin and his sister, Mary, were both born in Pennsylvania as was her husband, Robert Amlong. This suggests that the McLaughlin family was centered in Pennsylvania in the 1840s. Somehow, John McLaughlin ended up in Texas while Mary and her husband went to Muscatine County, Iowa. Additional research shows that what is believed to be the entire McLaughlin family moved to Johnson County, Iowa. The parents and three of the sons appeared in the 1870 US Census in Johnson County, Iowa. How and why John McLaughlin ended up in Texas remains a mystery.
----------------------------------------

Neither John McLaughlin nor Jane Davis are shown on the 1880 US Census of Rains County, Texas. There are no McLaughlins listed at all and the name Jane Davis does not appear there at all. Because John's marriage to Jane Davis in Emory, Texas did not occur until May of 1882, it must be assumed that both he and she lived elsewhere prior to the 1880 US Census and only came to Rains County Texas sometime between 1880 and May of 1882 when they were married there. I have no information to indicate why they would have been in Rains County as verbal family history says that Jane Davis was from the Dallas area and the McLaughlin family is known to have been in Pennsylvania around 1840 and moved to Johnson County, Iowa sometime before 1870.

Following the death of his wife, Jane Davis, who died about 6 weeks after the birth of James Samuel McLaughlin in 1890, both daughters Katherine and Mary McLaughlin were sent to Muscatine, Iowa to live with an aunt, Mary Anna McLaughlin-Amlong. James Samuel McLaughlin was sent to live with his uncle, Samuel McLaughlin in Johnson County, Iowa. It is not clear what the father, John McLaughlin, continued to do but it appears that he may have stayed in Texas to work the farm where he eventually died and is probably buried somewhere in Rains County, Texas. He may also traveled with his daughters back to Iowa where he died and may be buried back with his parents in Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City, Iowa.

If John McLaughlin stayed in the Emory, Texas area following the death of his wife, the following articles were discovered in the local newspaper issues which may help indicate that date of his death:

The Rains County Texas Leader newspaper of 26 Jan 1912 indicates that a John McLaughlin sold land to R. J. Cooke on 17 Jan 1912. It was described as "part of the J. F. Phillip Survey beginning at the SW Corner of a 190 acre tract."

The Rains County Texas Leader newspaper of 13 Dec 1912 indicates that "J. S. McLaughlin was the guest of his uncle here, Mr. John McLaughlin, Monday and Tuesday". I wonder if this was his son, James Samuel McLaughlin, who would have been 22 years old at the time. Perhaps the newspaper got the relationship wrong and described John as an uncle instead of a father. James Samuel McLaughlin was raised by his uncle, Samuel McLaughlin of Johnson County, Iowa.

The Rains County Texas Leader newspaper of 2 Feb 1917 indicates that "Uncle John McLaughlin is reported right sick". I have no information as to why the newspaper called him "uncle" and their is no evidence that the editor or newspaper reporter was actually related. Perhaps this was a commonly used term of endearment or a local custom to refer to elderly settlers as "uncles".

In Jan 2002, I walked through the local Emory City Cemetery and could not find any gravestones for John McLaughlin or his wife, Jane Davis. There were many gravestones in broken and scattered condition and several that were well worn away and no longer readable.
----------------------------------------

A 1900 US Census record from Rains County, Texas shows a "John McLaughlin" living with the Martin family as a "border". If this is the same John McLaughlin, then his age is quite older than I expected. With a birth date of 1890 for his son, James Samuel McLaughlin, then the father's age was 55 at the time of James' birth, an age which is not totally unreasonable, but nonetheless somewhat older than one would expect. His marital status as widowed certainly indicates that it is the correct person.

When his wife, Jane Davis, died in 1890, he would have been 55 years old and perhaps thought himself too old to care for the infant and other children at home. Thus the reason for him sending the children to live with relatives.
----------------------------------------

One of the difficulties in tracing just what happened to John McLaughlin following the death of his wife, Jane Davis, is that there were several John McLaughlin's born in Pennsylvania in 1835 and at least one born in July matching the supposed birth date of this John McLaughlin. Subsequent census records from 1910 onwards all show these McLaughlins still in Pennsylvania. So unless this John McLaughlin returned back to Pennsylvania, there is no record of him elsewhere.
-----------------------------------

New information surfaced in Sep 2014 from the RootsWeb site of Mary Hitchcock, (http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=m9hitchcock&id=I6412) which claims that John was remarried to Miranda Cline and had two additional children: Bertie E. McLaughlin, b. 23 Dec 1867 and Ingemisca McLaughlin, b. 1871. She also claims that John died 31 Dec 1921 in Iowa City, IA and is buried at the Oakland Cemetery there.

But the Iowa Death Certificate for that John McLaughlin who died in Iowa City on 31 Dec 1921 may not be for the correct John McLaughlin. It does say that this guy who died in 1921 was widowed and that matches what we would expect.

However, there are some problems. First is the fact that his age of 75 years at death would put his birth year at about 1846. It is thought that John McLaughlin was born in 1835 in Pennsylvania. According to the 1870 US Census in Iowa City, he was living next door to his parents and his birth year was about 1836 according to that census. According to the 1900 US Census in Rains County, TX, the John McLaughlin there was born in Jul 1835. He was shown as widowed on that census so we are assuming that this was the correct John McLaughlin. Neither of those census records match the age on the death certificate from 1921.

The next big problem is that the guy who died in 1921 was supposedly born in Ireland. This does NOT match with what we would expect. We believe that the correct John McLaughlin was born in Pennsylvania.

And finally, the name of the informant was Joe Vitosh which is a name not recognized as any relative of John McLaughlin. It could have been a well-meaning neighbor who did not know all of John's birth dates or location.
---------------------------------------------

Nov 2019: Jean Doris Lightfoot, granddaughter of John McLaughlin talked about stories that she heard from her mother, Mary Elizabeth McLaughlin, daughter of John McLaughlin. She said that John McLaughlin did not "send" his three daughters to Iowa to be raised by relatives following the death of his wife, Jane Davis, in 1890 in Texas but rather took all three of them to Iowa himself.

Apparently he shut down all his farming and cotton growing interests in Texas and moved to Iowa. For some reason, either financial or emotional, he was unable to raise the daughters on his own so he then had them raised by other siblings in Muscatine and nearby Johnson County, Iowa. He remained in the Muscatine County, Iowa area for a number of years. When his daughter Mary was married in 1904, he lived with or near Mary and her husband Lee Lightfoot. She recalled that John would frequently wander off and family members would have to go looking for him.

His daughter Mary and her new husband, Lee Lightfoot, actually moved to Emory, Texas to attempt to run the cotton farm land that was owned and abandoned by John McLaughlin. That venture must have lasted only a few years at the most and they soon returned to Muscatine.

The stories about what ever happened to John McLaughlin are lost to history; apparently he was in ill health and somewhat of a vagabond. Nobody knows for sure where he died or was buried.

NOTE - Samuel was listed as "Senior" because of the 14 year old Samuel living with him who was actually a nephew. Technically, there were no Samuel Juniors. In addition, on the 14 year old Samuel's card, it indicates that his mother was born in Iowa which was the same for the rest of the McLaughlin children. His mother was actually born in Texas but apparently the enumerator missed that point.

11. Jane Davis 3 was born about 1860 in Texas, United States and died in 1890 in Rains, Texas, United States, about age 30. Another name for Jane was Jennie Davis.222

General Notes:
Jean Lightfoot-Stedman says in 2000 that her grandmother, Jane Davis, died about 6 weeks after the birth of James Samuel McLaughlin. After that, the father, John McLaughlin, sent the two daughters to Muscatine, Iowa to live with John's sister, Mary Anna McLaughlin who had married Robert Amlong. The infant, James Samuel McLaughlin, was sent to live with John's brother, Samuel McLaughlin, in nearby Johnson County, Iowa. The records for births and deaths in Rains, Texas only start at 1903. Apparently a fire destroyed all records prior to that date except for Marriage Records which date back to 1880.
----------------------------------------

Attempting to pinpoint the exact date of death for Jane Davis is difficult. A check of the local newspaper in Emory, The Rains County Texas Leader, which has been compiled into several books available at the Rains County Library in Emory does not indicate any notice or obituary for Jane Davis McLaughlin within any plausible estimated year of death (1885-1910). However, these book compilations of the Rains County Texas Leader newspaper may be incomplete. Several books at the Rains County Library had indexes of local cemeteries but none listed any Jane McLaughlin or even John McLaughlin. It may be possible that when she died, she may have been buried back with her parents, supposedly closer to the Dallas, Texas area. In January of 2002, I walked through the local Emory City Cemetery and could not find any gravestones for John McLaughlin or his wife, Jane Davis. There were many gravestones in broken and scattered condition and several that were well worn away and no longer readable.
----------------------------------------

Neither John McLaughlin nor Jane Davis are shown on the 1880 US Census of Rains County, Texas. There are no McLaughlins listed at all and there is one Davis family but they show only two daughters listed as Lilly, age 10, and Pearl, age 3. There is one Katy Davis listed with daughter, Katy, age 11, but they are listed as black servants. Since his marriage to Jane Davis in Emory did not occur until May of 1882, it must be assumed that he lived elsewhere prior to the 1880 US Census and only came to Rains County Texas sometime between 1880 and May of 1882 when he married Jane Davis in Rains County, Texas. I have no information to indicate why they would have been in Rains County as verbal family history says that Jane Davis was from the Dallas area.
----------------------------------------

This date of death is based on the date of birth for Samuel McLaughlin. According to family information, Jane Davis is supposed to have died about 6 weeks after giving birth to Samuel.

Jane married John McLaughlin, son of James McLaughlin 80 81 218 219 220 221 and Elizabeth Smith,.80 81 218 219 220 John was born in July 1835 in Pennsylvania, United States,81 83 was baptized on 13 October 1836 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, and died on 31 December 1921 in Iowa City, Johnson, Iowa, United States,84 at age 86.

12. Patrick Drugan, Jr.,47 48 98 99 100 101 102 103 104 105 son of Patrick Drugan, Sr. 99 100 250 251 252 253 254 and Anne Coyle,99 100 251 255 256 was born on 12 October 1845 in County Tyrone, Ireland99 105 and died on 5 January 1926 in Trempealeau, Trempealeau, Wisconsin, United States,105 257 258 at age 80. The cause of his death was Pneumonia.

Burial Notes:
No gravestone markers for Patrick Drugan, Jr. or his wife have ever been found at the Old Catholic Cemetery. However, records for the Catholic diocese show that Lot 51 was owned by "Patrick Drugan" but it is unclear if this mean Patrick Sr. or Patrick Jr.

Lot 51 is not part of the traditional Drugan Family Plot area but rather at the extreme north end of the row immediately to the west. So there are two things that are unclear about this burial spot. First, is it the burial location for Patrick Drugan, Senior or Patrick Drugan, Junior? Second, regardless of who is buried there, why did they choose this location and not one of the empty graves within the Drugan family plot in the next row?

The published obituary for Patrick Junior says that he was buried beside his wife in the Catholic Cemetery. The Diocese of La Crosse WI Deaths/Burials for St. Bartholomew church - Book 2 (1915-1946) lists his date of death 5 Jan 1926 and burial date 8 Jan 1926.

During brush clearing operations in early 2013, an area marked by rocks was discovered. It is located around what would be Lot 51 which is at the far north edge of the row adjacent to where the Drugan Family Plot is located. Old records from the catholic church indicate that Lot 51 was owned by "Patrick Drugan" but does not explicitly state that he was buried there nor does it clarify if it were Patrick Drugan Senior or Junior.
--------------------------------------------------

I have a copy of a very incomplete and ill-maintained ledger of burials from the local catholic church which is all they have concerning the old Catholic Cemetery. It shows a Patrick Drugan buried in Lot 51, Grave 1, which is at the top of the adjacent row where all the rest of the Drugans are buried. This ledger also lists an Elizabeth Drugan buried in grave 2 along side of Patrick which one would naturally assume would be his wife. Patrick and his wife were NOT the first Drugan's to be buried in this cemetery and one has to wonder exactly why he and his wife were not buried in the Drugan family plot in the next row. Was there some kind of family feud? Patrick and wife are in Lot 51 while the Drugan family plot is in the adjacent row and consists of Lots 65 and 66.

General Notes:
Patrick's true birth date seems only to come from parish records in Ireland. For every census in the US, he gave different birth years varying from 1840 to 1852. I believe that the most logical and correct birth date was 12 Oct 1845.

The following are the various birth years that can be approximated based on these documents:
Nov 1840 - from the Drugan Family Records; without any source citations
1843 - from the 1910 and 1920 US census
1845 - from the 1860 Census; the exact date of 12 Oct is supplied by the research of Robert Westphal
1844 - from his obituaries published in Winona, MN
1848 - from the 1870 US Census and the 1905 Wisconsin State Census
Nov 1850 - from the 1900 US Census
1852 - from the 1880 Census

Pallbearers for her funeral were Mervin, Howard, Edmund, and Mark Keeffe as were her sons Edward, William, David, and Harry Drugan.

Burial Notes:
The somewhat limited records of burials in the old Catholic cemetery indicate that Patrick and his wife, Elizabeth, were not buried within the Drugan Family lots (Lot 65 and 66) but rather in a different row, Lot 51. The La Crosse Diocese Book 2, Deaths/Burials, 1915-1946 for the St. Bartholomew Church, Trempealeau does not include her 1915 death and burial but the published obituary for her husband indicates that he was to be buried alongside his wife. There is no visible grave marker for either.

General Notes:
Elizabeth was apparently enumerated twice in the 1870 US Census; once at home with her widowed mother in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin and a second time about 9 days later at the home of her married sister, Mary Keeffe, in Greencastle Borough, Franklin County, Pennsylvania.
----------------------------------------

Elizabeth gave different birth years for the various census records: 1857 for the 1880 US Census and 1905 Wisconsin census, and June 1850 for the 1900 US Census. Researcher and great grandson Robert C. Westphal provides a birth date of 24 June 1854 which apparently was taken from the obituary. The IGI baptismal record and the 1861 Ontario Canada Census both support birth years of 1853.

General Notes:
Whether his surname should be spelled HANSEN or HANSON seems to be a matter of his own personal preference. Apparently it was spelled HANSEN during his younger years to coincide with the spelling of his father's name. By the late 1890s, most of his siblings had already "Americanized" the spelling to HANSON. The gravestone of his mother is spelled as HANSEN but his own gravestone is spelled HANSON.

During his adult life in America, he went by the name of "Louis" instead of Lars. The spelling as "Lewis" generally occurs on census records before he was married. Years after his death, his family members purchased a gravestone but spelled his name as "Lewis Hanson". Once again the spelling of "Louis" seems to be a matter of personal preference but most family members and documents spell it as Louis instead of Lewis. In addition, his son Harry, was given a middle name of Louis which would seem to indicate that the spelling on the gravestone should have been Louis instead of Lewis.

In addition to the non-preferred spelling of Lewis, his gravestone also gives the incorrect birth year of 1858 instead of 1855. But even this may be a matter of which document one goes by to determine his exact year of birth. Only the census records from before his marriage indicate his true year of birth as 1855. Afterwards, his age seem to vary on each and every subsequent census record.
