• His obituary was published in the Unknown newspaper on 7 April 1936.

Caledonia, April 7 -- Theodore Schmitz, a Caledonian by birth and a near neighbor for more than 50 years, died Thursday, April 2, in a La Crosse hospital, to which he had been taken the day before. Cause of death was blood poisoning.

Funeral services were held Saturday from St. Bartholomew's church in Trempealeau, conducted by the Rev. Father Murphy. Burial was made in Evergreen Cemetery, near Centerville. Pallbearers were John Gibson, Tony Woestman, William Clower, Charles Wason, Paul Teska, Vince Pelowski.

Theodore Schmitz was a son of Mrs. and Mrs. Christian Schmitz, who at an early day settled in the town of Caledonia and opened the Four Mile House, a famous wayside inn of the days when caravans of ox teams wended their way to the steamboat dock at Trempealeau, laden with wheat. In later years he often recalled when, as a boy, he saw a line of such wagon s stretched along the road front and near to his home, with farmers camping for the night. He was born in the old inn Feb, 22, 1862. He was afterward to remark from time to time that he and George Washington started out on the same day. He was one of seven children to be reared on the old homestead. There he remained until his marriage to Miss Mary Toss, August 4, 1887.

When Mr. Schmitz started out for himself he didn't go far. There was a farm about three miles distant from the Schmitz place. This he bought and with his young bride set out to make a home - the home that was his the remainder of his days. He worked this farm as a youth. He continued on the job until his 75th year. Only recently he remarked, when visiting the Republican office: "I started out with two dollars in my pocket and a half- interest in a crop."

Two sons were born to Mr. Schmitz by his first marriage. Some years later the mother died. On Sept. 3, 1901, Mr. Schmitz married Miss Ella Drugan. No children were born to them, but a boy and a girl were adopted and became as their own. Also, another child was reared.

The widow and four children survive the husband and father. A surviving sister is Mrs. Charles A. Kellman, of Galesville, and a brother, Peter Schmitz, of Caledonia.

Surviving children are Adelbert and Hubert, sons by the first marriage, now living in Detroit, Mich., Mrs. Stanley Kass and the son Edward. The other child reared is Mrs. Leo Jeffra. There are eight grandchildren.

Blossom's biological sister was Marjorie Drugan who was perhaps just visiting each other at the Schmitz residence during the 1930 US Census or perhaps the parents had sent Marjorie to live the Ella and Theodore for a short while.
