8 18 Mar 1908: VANCE, Solomon, of New London, buried Nova vault until roads are better, then to be buried in Nankin Cemetery, born Richland Co. OH 1 Apr 1828, with parents when 3 yrs old to PA for short time, then back to OH in Orange Twp., Ashland Co., 1888 to Birmingham, Erie Co., 1902 to New London, died 11 Mar, 79y11m10d, 1849 married Eliza d/o Samuel Richards of Troy Twp., 8 children of whom 2 sons died previous, surviving O. H. of Orange, Mrs. Clara Simons of Troy Twp., Mrs. Dora Wagner of Republican City NE, Mrs. Lena Graves of Shelby, Mrs. Catherine Lawrence of Pulaski NY and Sarah of New London. [Ashland Times & Gazette]

Solomon Vance, the subject of this sketch, was born in Richland county, Ohio, April 1, 1828. When 3 years of age his parents removed to Pennsylvania, where they resided for a short time, returning to Ohio and settling in Orange township, Ashland county. In his youth he attended the public schools of that township, where he obtained a good knowledge of the English branches as then taught. at the age of 15 years he experienced religion, uniting with the M. E. church of North Orange. He was an earnest and efficient Christian worker, serving in the capacity of chorister, Sunday school superintendent and steward in the Methodist Episcopal and later in the Christian Union church. He retained a firm faith in his Savior to the end and found in Him a great source of consolation during a long and painful illness.

He was methodical, industrious, economical, prospering in his chosen vocation of farming, during his lifetime owning several good farms in Ashland and Erie counties. In 1888, he moved to Birmingham, Erie county, where he remained until 1902, when he removed to New London to spend a well-earned respite from toil and when, on March 11, he "fell on sleep," aged 79 years, 11 months, 10 days.

In 1849 he was joined in marriage with Eliza, daughter of the late Samuel Richards of Troy township, together walking hand in hand down life's pathway for 59 years, hearing each other's burdens and sharing each other's joy. To them eight children were born, three sons and five daughters. Two sons preceded him in death. One son, O. H. Vance, of Orange, the daughters, viz., Mrs. Clara Simons of Troy township, Mrs. Dora Wagner of Republican City, Neb., Mrs. Lena Graves of Shelby, Ohio, Mrs. Catharine Lawrence of Pulaski, N. Y., and Sarah Vance of New London, with their mother, survive him.

A brief service conducted by the Rev. A. Bowers was held at the home, the service proper being at the Methodist Episcopal church, Nova. The Rev. B. D. Jones, a former pastor and old friend, at his request, conducted the same, assisted by the Rev. G. W. Grubb and the Rev. M. T. Scarborough.

A large concourse of sorrowing relatives and old neighbors were present to testify to his worth. the body was placed in the vault at Nova. Later interment will be made in the beautiful cemetery at Nankin, there by the side of kindred dust to await the resurrection of the last great day.
