"Joseph Smith of Sullivan Township, Ashland County, Ohio was a son of Henry and Leah Wollam Smith. Joseph was born 21 July 1838 in then Richland County, Ohio on the Clear Creek Township farm his father purchased in 1837. The family then moved to Nova, Troy Township, Ashland County, Ohio before 1850. After Joseph married Martha J. Stentz, they purchased land in Sullivan Township, Ashland County and found there on census. They had 3 children: Charles J., b. Nov 1860, Henry, b. Dec 1866, Wilbur, b. Feb. 1872."

Joseph married Martha J. Stentz, daughter of Peter Stentz and Mary Ranshaw, on 6 October 1859.¹ (Martha J. Stentz was born on 8 November 1837 ¹ and died after February 1872.)
