Milton apparently worked as a travelling drugs salesman. The 1920 census shows him in a boarding house in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The 1940 census shows him in a hotel in Vincennes, Indiana.
He was married later that year on 16 Jul 1940 but I'm not sure of the marriage location just yet.
