Al began employment at the age of fourteen. He left the family home a few years later in order to help out the family financially. He graduated from Toulon High School in 1920 and proceeded to leave Toulon in 1923, to Rock Island, Illinois when he obtained a job in sales with the Illinois Oil Company. He was transferred to Minnesota in 1930. After his marriage to Frances, they took a long honeymoon trip to Yellowstone and the Black Hills. They returned to Minnesota briefly and again moved back to Rock Island until the Illinois Oil Company liquidated in 1945. Soon after the moved to Steele, Minnesota and purchased a small grocery store in Clinton Falls Township in 1946. Al and Frances operated the store until May of 1966 when the sold the building. Al and Frances lived in a home across the road from their son Larry and his farm. Al enjoyed helping Larry out on the farm during his remaining years. He died at the age of 90.
