"Keefer would come over to Mama's, let her wash and mend his
clothes, and eat her food then turn around and berate Daddy about how he was going to hell for drinking and cussing. Keefer, who had a house of his own, cheated Daddy out of the farm Granddaddy gave to him. Granddaddy bought farms so that each of his sons could have one."

"Keefer had a club foot and spoke very loudly because he was hard of hearing."

Mr. Keefer Earl Adkins, 96, of Roy Shafer Road, Middletown, died Friday, Dec 23, at Citizens Nursing Home, Frederick. He was the husband of the late Lottie Routzahn Adkins. Born in Middletown, June 4, 1887, he was the son of the late Charles and Ida Shafer Adkins. He was a retired farmer. Survivors include two sons, Earl E. Adkins, Frederick and John E. Adkins, Jefferson, three daughters, Mrs. Mary E. Godfrey, Washington, D.C. , Mrs. Elva C. Castle, Middletown and Mrs. Sara J. Knox, Clarksburg, one brother Guy Adkins, Middletown, 16 grand children and 17 great-grandchildren Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Tuesday, Dec 27, from the Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St, Middletown. The Revs. James Muller and James Jones will officiate. Interment will be in Reformed Cemetery, Middletown.

Was "Goldie" a second wife to Keefer or was it merely a nickname for Lottie? On the census record, her relationship was originiallnly written as "daughter" but it appears that may have been scratched out and nothing else written in. Basen on the similar age to Keefer, it must be his wife.
