It is not clear if the mother of Ada was Nancy Susan Kisner or Clara Herring. Source citations show the birth date of Ada to be in March 1886 but the father was already married to Clara Herring on 25 Dec 1884 which would normally indicate that Clara Herring would probably be the mother.
Many researchers show Ada as the daughter of Nancy Susan Kisner in spite of the apparent conflict of the birth year and the year of the father's remarriage. Many researchers also show a different person, Eva May Shockey, as a daughter of Clara Herring. Eva's birth date is known to be 2 Dec 1886 which was at least one year after the remarriage of the father to Clara Herring. Ada and Eva were probably not the same person as each appears with their respective parent in separate locations for the 1900 US Census. Ada appears with her supposed mother who was remarried and living in Sullivan County, Indiana while Eva appears with her father and his 2nd wife, Clara, living in Champaign County, Ohio. The two different enumerations were only about 5 days apart so it is very unlikely that the two young daughters could be the same person. Yet mysteriously both daughters have very similar ages, Ada was shown on the 1900 US Census with a birth date of March 1886 while Eva May was shown as having been born in Dec 1886 in Ohio. Other source citations give the same middle initial to Ada which matches the middle name of Eva May Shockey.
Trying to explain the exact parentage of Ada is troublesome. There is always the chance that in spite of being remarried to his 2nd wife, the father decided to father one more child with his then divorced 1st wife.
