John Harpster was born in 1845 in Indiana and was orphaned at a very young age. The family story is that his parents were killed in an accident in Indiana and John was brought back to the Harpster homestead on horse back when he was a baby. He was raised by his grandparents Jacob Harpster and Susanna Lightfoot.
