William Dewitt Harris, 82, of Grantsville, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at his residence.

He was born in Calhoun, the son of the late Rev. C. D. and Glada Ritchie Harris.

He graduated from Calhoun High School in 1941 and retired from Calhoun County Board of Education as a custodian. He was a member of Knotts Memorial United Methodist Church, where he served as superintendent for 46years. He was a member of Parkersburg's Nemesis Temple, Charleston's Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, and Order of Eastern Star and Eureka Lodge No. 40, Grantsville. He served on Grantsville's town council, was a Cub Scout leader, softball pitcher and active in civic organizations.

Surviving are two sons, Robert Harris of Parkersburg and Larry Harris of Grantsville; two daughters, Judy Phares of Marietta, Ohio, and Dorothy Kerby of Grantsville; one sister, Oleta Heiney of Ravenna, Ohio; six granddaughters, Alice Harris, Debbie Williams, Ronda Williams, Kelly Raines, Alissa Harris and Casey Harris; three great-grandchildren; and a close friend, Wilma Gene Kerby.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Ernestine Winifred Wilson Harris; one daughter, Alice Marie Harris; one brother, Rev. Ray Harris; and two sisters, Juanita Waggoner and Leota Leggett.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Mary Zimmer officiating. Burial was in Bethlehem Cemetery, near Grantsville, with Masonic graveside rites.
