Adeline Marie Holmes ^{6 7}

  General Notes:

Her birth year varied from 1867, 1868, and 1869. Her actual given name is not found on any official document so there is some discrepancy if it was Adeline or simply Addie as found on almost all census and death records.

Addie was married on Christmas Eve of 1884 at the age of 16 in nearby Rock County, Wisconsin presumably because where they lived in Winnebago County, Illinois required a minimum age of 18.

In the 1900 US Census she indicated that she already had given birth to 7 children but only 3 were still alive. In the 1910 US Census she indicated a total of 8 children but 6 were still alive. The numbers from the 1910 US Census seem most plausible because I have records for the 6 known children.

Addie and Clarence were divorced sometime following the death of her father on 4 Dec 1910. She then married Charles Noreen from Sweden.

In what has to be the strangest household I've seen, the 1920 US Census shows Addie, her 2nd husband, two of her children, and her ex-husband all living together.

In another strange twist, the 1930 US Census shows one of her sons from her 1st husband still living with them but his surname had changed from Leggett to Noreen apparently meaning that Charles Noreen may have adopted the 29 year old stepson. Or perhaps it's just a case of the enumerator erroneously assuming that the son of the wife must be the son of the husband and therefore have the same surname. The latter is probably true because in the 1940 US Census, after Charles Noreen had died, Addie is found widowed and living with the same son mentioned in the 1930 US Census but this time he has his original Leggett surname.

Addie and both of her husbands are buried in Cedar Bluff Cemetery in Rockford, Illinois.

¹³ Funeral services for Mrs. Addie Marie Noreen, 73, 1718 14th street who died Sunday afternoon at a local hospital after an illness of five days, will be held at 2:30 p.m. today at the Burpee-Wood funeral home, 420 North Main street. Dr. O. Garfield Beckstrand, Pastor of Trinity Lutheran church, will officiate and burial will be in Cedar Bluff Cemetery.

Mrs. Noreen was born at Cherry Valley, Dec. 3, 1869, the daughter of Charles T. and Mary Holmes.

Surviving are a son, Robert Legett, at home; two daughters, Mrs. Marie Gambino and Mrs Margaret Stonewall, both of Rockford; two sisters, Mrs. Catherine Gustafson of Rockford and Mrs. Rose Walker of Belvidere, and three brothers, Frank and Ed Holmes, both of Rockford, and Will Holmes who lives in the west. Her husband, Charles, died in March, 1938.
