bullet  General Notes:

There are 3 different John Holmes found in the 1820 US Census from Hopkinton, Hillsborough, New Hampshire. The correct John Holmes was born 27 Jan 1779 thus making him 41 years old for the 1820 census but of those names that were enumerated making a specific identification is nearly impossible.

1 female 45 and up (wife)
3 family members total

This John Holmes listed as age 45 and up on page 778 is close to the age of the correct John Holmes who would be age 41. But if this is the correct one, then he should have been listed as being in the age group 26-45 instead of 45 and up.

1 male 26-45 (John Jr)
2 females under 10
2 females 10-16

The John Holmes Jr, age 26-45 also on page 778, and the other John Holmes, age 26-454 on page 787 are both probably not correct because the correct John Holmes was not a Junior. His father was Benjamin Holmes.

-----------------------------------------------------

Was this the correct John Holmes? There was a John Holmes Sr and a John Holmes Jr that show up consecutively on the 1830 census form.

1 male..20 to 30
1 male..40 to 50 (probably John Holmes, real age 51)

1 female..5 to 10
1 female..10 to 15
1 female..15 to 20
1 female..20 to 30
1 female..50 to 60 (probably his wife, Mary)

John Holmes Jr
2 males under 5
2 males 10-15
1 male 30-40 (probably John Jr)
1 female under 5
3 females 5-10
1 female 30-40 (probably the wife)
1 female 50-60
1 female 70-80
12 family members total

According to the census data, John Sr was probably the male that was between 40 to 50 years old in his family listing. The John Holmes Jr was probably the male that was 30-40 years old in his family listing. The age of the correct John Holmes would have been 51 years old so while the senior John's age was not exactly listed in the correct age group, this was probably the correct John Holmes.

The listing for a John Holmes Jr immediately following the listing for the senior means that he probably was a son. No birth records have yet been found. Living in his household was a female 30-40 years old who was probably his wife but there were also two elderly females of unknown relationship. One was 50-60 years old and the other was 70-80 years old.

1 males..40 to 50
1 females..10 to 15
2 females..15 to 20
1 females..20 to 30
1 females..40 to 50

John Holmes (Senior) was born in 1779 and would have been about 60 at the time of this census yet there are no such family members in that age group on this 1840 enumeration.

Therefore, this census was probably for his son, "John Holmes Jr," who appears with his own family on the 1830 census right after the enumeration of John Holmes, the father.

The son was probably born about 1800 which accounts for the 1 older male age 30 to 40 and female age 30 to 40 on the 1830 census for the listing of the "John Holmes, Jr." and with his wife are most likely the 1 older male age 40 to 50 and female age 40 to 50 on this 1840 census.
