  General Notes:

The name(s) of the wives of James Renton and his brother, William, are a little confusing. It may be that Jean Dickson was married to each of them at one time. However, it may also be possible that the older James Renton was actually married to Jean Dickson who was born about 1730, but the younger William Renton was married to the younger sister, Jane Dickson who was born in 1743.

There is a Christening record for a son named William, born in 1766, which clearly shows the father as James Renton and the mother as Jean Dickson.

In addition, there is a marriage record which shows Jean Dickson being married to the older William Renton 5 years earlier in 1761.

Jean next married William Renton, son of William Renton and Catherine Kid, on 6 June 1761 in Innerwick, East Lothian, Scotland.² (William Renton was born in 1739 in Scotland, baptized on 18 March 1738/39 in Innerwick, East Lothian, Scotland ⁴ and died on 6 June 1761.)
