bullet  Marriage Notes:

The marriage index lists their names as Joseph Danner and Ellen Dagenhart.
----------------------------------------

There is something very strange about the family and the 1880 US Census. They were enumerated twice on the very same day of 25 June 1880. Once in Boonsboro and then again in Mechanicstown which is about 20 miles away using modern highways.

However, the family listing is not identical. The one enumeration from Mechanicstown includes the married son, George, along with his wife and his son. On the same day, the enumeration in Boonsboro eliminates the married son, George, and his family. And as is typical of most census enumerations, the ages of the parents, Joseph and Elmira, vary by one year.

I've seen double enumerations before but they usually were a week or two apart which means the family moved during that time period. I have never seen a double enumeration on the same day in two different towns. Maybe one was taken early in the morning, then the family moved during the day, and the second enumeration happened later that evening in the new location. Or perhaps the date entered on the census form by the enumerator was wrong.

Because all previous and subsequent census records for Joseph were in Boonsboro, I suspect that on that one day in 1880, the family might have been visiting the married son, George, who had moved his family to Mechanicstown. The census enumerator for Mechanicstown stopped by and assumed the elderly Joseph was the head of the household. After the visit, Joseph returned back home to Boonsboro only to receive a visit from a different census enumerator in that location.
