The uncle of Charles, Martin Fast, once lived with Minnehaha and her parents, John and Nancy Rice, according to the 1880 US Census. At the time, Martin was newly divorced (even though the census incorrectly showed him as married) with his ex-wife and son living elsewhere in Hillsdale County, Michigan. Apparently, Martin's nephew, Charles Fast, came around to visit his uncle and met his future wife while visiting.
