It is believed that John Renton who was only 17 at the time, fathered her illegitimate son, William Renton who was born in 1859. Isabella was only 18 at the time. William was raised for the most part by his paternal grandmother, Margaret Crombie.

In the years 1866, 1869, and 1879, it appears that Isabella gave birth to additional illegitimate children named William, Robert, and Isabella Glass.

Isabella continued to live with her parents until 1878 when she was married at the age of 37 to Thomas Kerr in Whitekirk, East Lothian.
