I suspect that his true surname was Whittington instead of Witting. The 1900 census enumerator had very poor spelling and a very difficult and sloppy handwriting to read. If you look closely at the census image, right after the word Witting there appears to be several small squiggles added and these could signify the "ton" to be added to the word Witting thus giving W(h)ittington. ![]()
