bullet  General Notes:

Baffling are the military and pension records for Edward Graham. The Veteran's Pension Payment cards show his name as "Edward Graham alias Elbridge Barr" but I have no idea as to why the use of an alias nor do I know why the name of Elbridge Barr.

There is the Civil War enlistment contract signed by Elbridge Barr on 14 Aug 1862 in Hillsborough County, NH. It states that he was born about 1844 in Bedford, NH which is the same age and birth location for Edward Graham. Muster out rolls for Elbridge Barr show that he was discharged on 4 Jun 1863 because of Disability at Hospital, Baltimore, MD. These enlistment dates and discharge dates match the dates on the Veteran's Pension Payment cards for Edward Graham.

I can find no connection between these 2 names other than the fact that the Veteran's Payment card shows the 2 names together as an alias.
---------------------------------------------

Also somewhat strange is the fact that his first daughter was born in 1862 but he was not married to Margaret Augusta Holmes until 1868. The birth year of his first daughter and the date of his enlistment as Elbridge Barr cannot go unnoticed. Margaret would have been pregnant with the daughter, Viola, in Jan 1862. In August 1862 when Margaret would have been about 7 months pregnant, would it be possible for the 18 year old Edward to have enlisted under the alias name to avoid getting married? In June 1863 is when Edward was discharged still under the name of Elbridge Barr.

I have yet to find any birth records for Viola Graham just to make sure that Edward Graham was shown as the father. But for some other reason, the couple took another 5 years following his discharge from the army until they were married in 1868.

There is some evidence that Viola may not have been born to Margaret Holmes. On the 1910 US Census, Margaret indicated that she had given birth to only 2 daughters instead of the expected 3. But then Margaret went on to indicate that both of them still alive when in fact 1 daughter had died in 1878. Was she intentionally ignoring the deceased daughter and reporting only the 2 surviving daughters or was she reporting giving birth to only 2 daughters but made a mistake in reporting how many were still alive and somehow included the 1 step-daughter or adopted daughter of Viola as one of the living?

And the final puzzling thing is that on their first census in 1870 taken just 2 years after being married, the name of Edward's wife is shown as Eninsa instead of the expected Margaret or Augusta. The age of 25 of Eninsa does not match what would be expected of Margaret Holmes who would have been 32.

• United States Veterans Administration Pension Payments: 1907-1933. The payment cards show that Edward started collecting pension payments in 1908 and continued until his death in 1929. The amounts varied from $36 to $150. I don't understand the name used at the top of the cards in which his name is entered as "Edward Graham alias Elbridge Barr". Just who is Elbridge Barr and why is there an alias name being used?
