The 1920 US Census shows evidence that following the death of his 2nd wife, Lydia P. Holmes, John was remarried for a 3rd time to a widow named Lillian F. Brown. The census shows them living in Amesbury, Massachusetts with her listed as age 43 and born in Massachusetts. By 1922, John had died in Amesbury, Massachusetts.

Other than the gross misspelling of his surname as Doudill or Dondrill on his 1892 marriage record, the 1900 and 1910 US Census records show his surname spelled as McDougall. However, following the death of his 2nd wife, Lydia P. Holmes in 1917, and his remarriage to Lillian F. Brown in 1918, that marriage record continued to show the spelling as McDougall. On the 1920 US Census his surname was spelled as MacDougall. His gravestone has the surname spelled as MacDougall.
