Some researchers want to show a marriage between Alphaeus Payne and Mary Elizabeth Stone but his wife was actually Mary Elizabeth Hackley whom he married in 1879 and together they had 11 children. Her name appears very similarly to that of Mary Elizabeth Stone and can easily fool researchers that look at birth, marriage, and death records for their children in which the mother's name sometimes appears as Mary Elizabeth Payne.

The marriage record with Mary Elizabeth Hackley shows her father's name to be Lewis A. Hackley so there is no possibility that Mary Elizabeth Stone was briefly married to someone named Hackley thus making the two Marys to be the same person.

To add to the confusion, there is a Virgina marriage record between for a daughter named Annie Lillian Merchant and the parents are shown as Alpheus (Alfred) Merchant and Mary E. Merchant. These people are of no relationship.
