• Her obituary was published in December 2003. 1 HICKORY - Edith Brittain Rhoney, 89, of Hickory, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, Dec. 25, 2003, at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 24, 1914, in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late James Cornelius and Lola Wyant Brittain.
She retired after teaching school in the Catawba County School System for 40 years and was named as "Outstanding Elementary Teacher" in 1973. Edith was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Association. She was an active member of Penelope Baptist Church in Long View.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence B. Rhoney, and three brothers.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Jack Burns of Hickory; a son and daughter-in-law, William "Bill" and Pam Rhoney of Midlothian, Va.; a half sister, Barbara Young of Hickory; five grandchildren, Angela Brown of Taylorsville, Tracy Chapman of Connelly Springs, and Brittany Rhoney, Jonathan Rhoney and Cameron Rhoney of Midlothian, Va.; four great-grandchildren, Austin Williams of Taylorsville, Eric Chapman of Connelly Springs, Shawn Chapman of Connelly Springs and Jeremy Brown of Taylorsville.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, at Penelope Baptist Church in Long View beginning at 3 p.m. Dr. John Farriss and the Rev. Jack Burns will officiate.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons and great-grandsons.
The family will receive friends in the church sanctuary starting at 1:30 p.m. prior to the funeral service.
No graveside service will be held, but Edith will be laid to rest at Catawba Memorial Park.
