Thelma was adopted by Julius and Magel Mull. Reportedly, Thelma's natural father killed his wife (her mother) and then killed himself.

The year in which she was adopted is not clear but she was not listed with the family on the 1930 census so the adoption probably occurred between 1930 and 1940.
