----------------------------------------------

As of 15 Feb 2021, there seems to be two FindAGrave memorial pages established for Cornelius E. Satterfield, one in Omaha, Nebraska and another in Fairmont, West Virginia.

Records indicate that Cornelius actually died in Fairmont, West Virginia. But was he buried there?

There is what appears to be the possibility of another person with the identical name of Cornelius E. Satterfield that is buried at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Omaha, Douglas, Nebraska who also died in the same year of 1902. There is a FindAGrave memorial page (#73072609) for that person which shows a picture of the gravestone but with very faint engraving it appears to actually read "Catherine(?).......Wife of C. E. Satterfield, died June 6(?) 1893; aged ?6 years, ? months, 15(?) days." It does not seem to be the gravestone of C. E. Satterfield unless his name appears on another side of the vertical monument which does not show in the photograph. The text entries on that FindAGrave page gives a death date of 1902 and adds that the date of interment was 15 Mar 1902. Those death date and burial dates do not seem to be on the monument itself and may have been added by the creator of the memorial page.

There is another memorial page (#73072608) at the same cemetery in Omaha, Douglas, Nebraska for the wife of C. E. Satterfield, and her name is given as Catherine C. Satterfield with a death date of 1893 and a burial date of 8 July 1893. The photo attached to that memorial page is the same exact photo used for the husband's memorial page described above.

There are two other Satterfields also buried at the cemetery in Omaha but their burial dates were not until much later, 1960 and 1985 so they may not be related.

There are one similar FindAGrave memorial page (#191329789) established in 2018 for Cornelius Satterfield in Fairmont, West Virginia at the Hopewell Cemetery but offers no photo of the gravestone. It would make logical sense that both Cornelius and his wife might be buried there because that is the burial location for his parents and at least 3 of his siblings but there is no other memorial page for his wife Catherine nor any indication of where she might be buried.

So which FindAGrave location is correct --- the one in Omaha, Nebraska or the one in Fairmont, West Virginia? Perhaps the answer lies in the document card coming from the United States Deceased Physicians File (AMA), 1864-1968 database on FamilySearch.org which reads "Satterfield, Cornelius E.; Omaha, Nebr.; March 11, 1902' College of Physicians and Surgeons, Keokuk, Iowa, 1878, a physician of Omaha, Neb., died March 11, from paralysis after a lingering illness, at Cook's Hospital, Fairmont, W.Va." Additionally there is the 1885 Nebraska State Census shows Cornelius and wife living in Jefferson County, Nebraska.

At some point after the death of his wife, Cornelius must have traveled back to the area where he grew up in and around Marion County, West Virginia until he took ill and died there on 11 March 1902. His body must have been shipped back to Omaha, Nebraska where he was laid to rest near his wife, Catherine.

As a result of both of those documents, it proves that Cornelius was a resident of Omaha but actually died in Fairmont, West Virginia while on an extended visit. It would seem that the correct burial site for Cornelius is indeed at Omaha and that he died in March 1902.

The FindAGrave memorial page #191329789 for the Hopewell Cemetery in Fairmont, Marion, West Virginia is most likely not correct. Perhaps the person who established that page thought that it must be true that since he died in Fairmont, he most likely was buried in the same cemetery there as his parents and some siblings. This memorial page will soon be removed.
