This marriage had some unique qualities. John was 34 years older than Lucille when they were married in 1927. Lucile was 31 years old at the time while John was 65. Nevertheless, John fathered a daughter, Olive M. Holmes, when he was about 65 years old.

On the 1930 US Census John's name appears with a middle initial of H instead of the expected S. In addition, his birth location was listed as New York instead of the expected Missouri.

On his death certificate, his name was again listed as John H. Holmes instead of John S. Holmes. The informant for the information on the death certificate was Ed Holmes, a person of yet unknown relationship.
