  General Notes:

There is a record of a marriage between William C. Gantt and Sarah A. Anderson on 3 Apr 1912 in Boone, Boone County, Iowa. The document correctly lists the names of William's parents as Edmund and Frances.

Six years later, there is a 1918 World War I Draft Registration Card for William Clyde Gantt in Detroit, Michigan but it is a little suspicious if its the right person or not. It shows the complete correct name of William Clyde Gantt. It has his correct birth date. It lists a wife named Alice living back in Iowa in the general area where William grew up. It list his occupation as a cook. But what is strange is that it shows him living in Detroit, Michigan. There is no other evidence that William was ever living in Detroit even though the registration card lists a specific address in that city. If Sarah A. Anderson who was married to William Clyde Gantt in 1912 had a middle name of Alice and preferred to go by that middle name, then it would seem more positive that these were the correct persons.

About one year later, on Nov 28, 1919 in Polk County, Iowa, Alice Gantt was granted a divorce from Clyde Gantt on the grounds of willful desertion. The date of marriage was listed as Apr 1913. The name of Alice matches the name of the wife listed on the World War I Draft Registration Card. If Sarah preferred to use a middle name of Alice and if William Gantt was being called by his middle name of Clyde, then these were the correct persons.

Although pure speculation on my part, it appears to me that Sarah A. Anderson's middle name probably was Alice. Soon after the marriage, William left Alice in Iowa and went to Detroit, Michigan for unknown reasons, probably entirely abandoning the marriage. William registered for the draft in Detroit in 1918. Sarah Alice Anderson filed for divorce back in Iowa in 1919.

Sometime around 1920 William moved westward ultimately into the Los Angeles area. The 1930 US Census shows him living with a wife name Minnie who was born in Michigan. William's occupation according to the census was that of a cook, which matches what was listed on the 1918 WWI Draft Registration Card. It may be possible that William met his 2nd wife, Minnie, back in the Detroit, Michigan area where they could have been married there or after the two of them relocated to California.

No other marriage records for either of his possible two wives have been located other than the one from 1912 that lists Sarah A. Anderson in Boone, Iowa. No other census records after living with his mother in 1895 have been found for William other than the 1930 US Census record from Los Angeles, California when he was living with Minnie.

According to the death certificate, William died from nephritis complicated by acute alcoholism. It also indicates that he was buried in Hollywood Cemetery but no record has been found on Find-A-Grave.
