bullet  General Notes:

Martha Hester, born in Vermilion County in 1844 to Jesse and Sarah (Sally) Hester, married David L. Smith in Vermilion County in 1861. They farmed in Champaign County (on a farm not far from the Stanton Cemetery) and had a son Jesse in 1879. After David died in 1883, she married an E. W. Swisher in 1888 and later divorced him in 1895 regaining her Smith married name. She later married a Campbell from Hamilton County and lived in McLeansboro, Illinois. Her Illinois death record states she died in McLeansboro on Jan 12, 1926 and was buried at St. Joseph. Although there is not a tombstone for her in the Stanton Cemetery, most likely she is buried next to her first husband.

The 1850 Census shows Martha Hester (age 5, born in Illinois) living in District 21, Vermilion County, Illinois with parents Jesse (age 28) and Sarah (age 31) and siblings Thomas (age 8), Keziah (age 3), Mary (age 2) and Silas (age 0). She married David L. Smith on Oct. 3, 1861 in Vermilion County, Illinois. The 1870 Census shows Martha Smith (age 23) living in Stanton Township, Champaign County, Illinois with husband David (age 33). The 1880 Census shows Martha Smith (age 36) living in Stanton Township with husband David (age 44) and son Jesse O. (age 6 months). After David's death, she married Enoch W. Swisher on July 9, 1888 in Champaign County, Illinois. They divorced in 1895. The 1900 Census shows Martha Smith (age 55, born in Illinois in October 1844) living in Champaign, Illinois with son Jesse O. (age 20). The 1910 Census shows M. E. Campbell (age 65) as widowed and living in McLeansboro, Illinois.
