Robert J. Hicks, who served in Co. F (Smith Mountain Rangers) 55th Reg't, NC Troops, CSA, Private. Born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, in October, 1841. Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba or Cleveland County at age 20, April 22, 1862, for the war. Reported absent on sick furlough in June, 1862. Returned to duty on an unspecified date. Reported present in May-June, 1864. Reported at home on furlough in September-October, 1864. Surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865.
