bullet  General Notes:

For the 1900 US Census, Maggie was living at the home of J. C. Patterson and family who is believed to be a brother of Maggie's mother, Margaret Patterson, who probably died between 1876 and 1880. At that time, her father, James Morrison Houser, kept his 4 sons but sent the young daughter to live with his married sister, Elizabeth Houser and her family. Maggie appeared on the 1880 US Census as living with her Aunt Elizabeth in Logan County. Evidently she was later sent to live with this brother of her mother and she appears here on the 1900 US Census as living with her Uncle J. C. Patterson.

What is a little troubling about this 1900 US Census is that the parents' birth locations are shown as Kentucky and Illinois instead of what I expected to see, Kentucky and Scotland. I have a long discussion from other researchers about the names and number of wives for James Morrison Houser and it involves a key piece of evidence on the 1880 US Census for Maggie while she was living with her Aunt. That census showed Maggie's mother as being born in Scotland.

On this 1900 US Census, it shows that J. C. Patterson was born in Illinois in 1847, unlike his supposed sister, Margaret, who I claim was born in Scotland in 1844. Notice however, that J. C.'s parents were both born in Scotland so it remains highly possible that Margaret was born in Scotland in 1844, his parents then came to the United States sometime between 1844 and 1847, and then J. C. Patterson was born in Illinois in 1847. (Brian L. Lightfoot)
