  General Notes:

What is the correct birth date for George? His gravestone has the year 1868 and that seems to fit closely with the birth year of his wife, America Belle Esterday, who was born in 1871. However, if his parents were William C. Lucas and Roena Darner as believed, then George appears with them on the 1860 US Census with an age of 3 and on the 1870 Census with an age of 12 years. His birth date is believed to be Oct 1857 which is vastly different than the 1868 recorded on his gravestone.

Some will argue that his age of 12 on the 1870 census was a misprint and should actually be 2 thus validating the 1868 birth year. However, a deciding document is the 1860 census for his parents which shows George alive in 1860 at the age of 3 thus validating the 1857 birth year.

So why is there an 11 year discrepancy in his reported birth year on the gravestone? Maybe he did not want to let his wife know that he was actually much older than she. Or maybe these are two different George Lucas' but that is doubtful because the 1900 US Census which shows George and America married, indicates that his birth was Oct 1857. The only conclusion is that the gravestone is in error.
