• His obituary was published in the Unknown newspaper in August 1931 in Guthrie, OK.

Early Day Freighter and Frontiersman Dies Here.

Veteran Of Union Army And Eighty Niner Opened Trails In Southwest. Columbus Fast one of the West's early freighters died at his home Thursday at the age of 87.

After serving in the northern army came west to open new trails in Kansas and other western states. After several years of freighting from civilized outposts to far off trading posts, Fast made the race for a homestead at the Oklahoma Opening.

He staked a claim seven miles southwest of Lovell where he opened the first General Merchandise Store north of the Cimarron River.

Fast freighted goods from Guthrie to his and neighboring stores in that section. The General Merchandise Store became the town of Columbia in respect of the pioneer freighter. Battling the roaring Cimarron river when people in Fast's home vicinity were in need of food was part of the pioneering difficulties attached to his freighting career.
