Injured Pedestrian Sues City
The city of Muscatine was sued again in Muscatine district court today by a pedestrian seeking redress for accidental fall injuries and disability. Clara Schafnit, the plaintiff, asks judgment of and for costs. Her petition states she fell on the walk and entrance to the city parking lot in the 100 block of West Third street about am Feb. 20. She claims the walkway was rough from snow and ice. The fall, it is claimed, broke her left leg and injured her right arm. She cites expenses for medical and hospital care, loss of work as a registered nurse, and the necessity to place her mother in a hospital because she was unable to care for her while she also was a patient.

This morning police were called to investigate a car-truck accident at Mulberry Ave. 150 feet north of E. 4th St. The police report says a 1965 Ford driven by Clara Jane Schafnit, 72, of 606 E. 11th Sts was pulling away from the curb heading north when an unidentified third vehicle forced the Schafnit auto into a parked 1968 Chevrolet truck operated by Ronald Russell Horton, 28, of 312 W. 8th St. The third auto was headed south on Mulberry according to police.

Clara Jane Schafnit, 79, 606 E. 11th St. died this morning at the Muscatine General Hospital following a short illness. Services will be held at 1 PM Friday at the Geo. M. Wittich Funeral Home. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon on Thursday at the funeral home.
Clara Schafnit was born July 4, 1898 in Muscatine, the daughter of Fred and Varena Crees Schafnit. She was a life resident of Muscatine. A member of the First United Presbyterian Church, she belonged to the Rose Croix Shrine and the Electa Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. In 1926 she graduated from the Benjamin Hershey School on Nursing. She retired in 1970.
She is survived by one sister, Mrs. George (Gladys B.) Morrison, Atalissa. Preceding her in death were her parents and one brother.
