The key to discovering Vida's maiden name is finding a 1920 Census record showing a "Vida V. Cartright" who was born about 1909 in Iowa living with her parents, David and Alma Cartright in Wyoming, Jones County, Iowa which is immediately east of Linn County, Iowa where George Dewey was residing in 1920.
There is a birth record which correctly shows her surname as "Curtright" which is exactly the way the SSDI showed her father's name upon her death in 1986.

Later, she was married about 1928 to James E. Taylor and gave birth to a daughter, Gwendolyn on 27 Jan 1929. This is the same daughter that appears with Vida and George Linn on the 1940 census except Gwendolyn has a Linn surname meaning George adopted her as his own, whether that was an official adoption is not known.
