Thomas traveled with family as child from Winchester, Ohio to Iowa before 1855. He received what the older members of our family called, a "subscription school education". He worked various jobs for added income. After he married (family legend states they eloped), he started farming and raised a crop in Illinois. That autumn, Thomas and three other men journeyed to Iowa by means of a team and light wagon. At the junction of the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers they found a fort and a few cabins. They traveled north through Story and Hardin counties and turned south in Marshall County. At the little town of Albion, they met a man named Reid who was from the home region of Ohio. He urged them to spend the night with them. The next day, Thomas was taken to a well improved farm 1/2 miles to the west. The fields were fenced with rails, a large orchard and good outbuildings. Thomas had carried gold in a belt around his waist and closed the deal with the owner who was Judge Hobbs. The Hobbs and Swearingen families spent the winter of 1855 in the same house. A large house was built in about 1875. In this house, the windows to the right of the porch were those of Thomas' study. To the left was the music room with a big square piano. Above, the six girls had a large room with two connecting rooms. In 1976, Thomas attended his father's funeral in Ohio and also attended the worlds fair in Pennsylvania. In making his will, his father had claimed of Thomas..."Thomas has prospered in Iowa and does not need a share. However, he helped me when he was young and I am determined that he receive the same as the others." Thomas purchased the County High School went it went bankrupt and leased it to the Lutheran denomination to be operated as a seminary.

NOTE - I am unsure as to the actual identity of the daughter "Charlie E. Swearingen". According to the age given, she would have been born about 1864. There was an "Ella A. Swearingen" who was supposedly born in 1862. Otherwise, there was a son born in 1864 with the name of Emmet Lincoln Swearingen.
