Virgil Stewart Crees ^{1 2 3 4 5}

  General Notes:

There is an official record of birth for Virgil born in Wapsie (West Liberty), Muscatine County, Iowa on 28 Oct 1917 instead of the month of Nov as is normally assumed to be his month of birth. Either the birth record or its transcription index is wrong, or else Virgil just forgot what month he was born in as he got older. The birth record from October does indicate that Frank Crees and Edith Riddle were the parents.

The earliest I can find any record of him using the month of November instead of October would seem to be when he was elderly and retired to the Fort Jones area in Siskiyou County, California. Apparently his gravestone also indicates November instead of October.
------------------------------------------

Virgil was married in Southern California in 1940 shortly after being enumerated in the 1940 Census in Los Angeles. There is a record of an enlistment in the US Army in 1945 at Fort McArthur in southern California near San Pedro for a Virgil S. Crees with a birth year of 1917. However, this enlistment record indicates a birth location of Alaska and a marital status of single so I am not sure if this is the same person in spite of the somewhat unique name. Virgil and his wife, Adina, are both buried in the far northern California city of Fort Jones just south of the Oregon border.
