bullet  General Notes:

The 1910 US Census record shown below from the Soldiers' Home for Jacob Ryan may not be for the correct Jacob Ryan. While Jacob C. Ryan was enumerated at home with his wife, Martha, for the 1900 US Census back in Williams County, Ohio, it seems that there already was another Jacob Ryan living in the Soldiers' Home in Erie County and he appears on the 1900 US Census there. The only difference that I can spot between the two is that Jacob C. Ryan, husband of Martha Lightfoot, was born in 1824 in Ohio and the other one that was first to be living at the Soldiers' Home was born in 1835 in Pennsylvania.

The problem is that Jacob C. Ryan, husband of Martha Lightfoot, should have been 85 years old for the 1910 US Census but the census record indicates that the person was only 74 years old and born in Pennsylvania. It therefore appears that this census record would be for the other Jacob Ryan.

The obituary that was published in Bryan, Ohio states that he was living at the Old Soldiers' when he died there in 1913. Unfortunately we don't know how long he had been living there. There probably was a good chance that during the period between 1910 and 1913, there may have been two Jacob Ryans living there.

If you consider that his wife Martha died in 1908 then there may no longer have been any partner for him to assist him in daily life and he may have moved into the Soldiers' home immediately after 1908. But then you'd expect both Jacob Ryans to appear on the 1910 US Census from there. Because both Jacob Ryans do not appear there in the 1910 US Census, I suspect that he may have stayed at home for a few more years following Martha's death in 1908 and then moved into the Soldiers' home after the 1910 US Census had already been completed. Thus the 1910 US Census from Erie County shows the wrong Jacob Ryan and that the correct one may have been missed completely in Williams County.

In addition, there is an Ohio Death record for a Jacob Ryan who died in Perkins Township, Erie County, Ohio on 25 March 1916. This was most likely the same Jacob Ryan that was listed on the 1910 US Census record for the Ohio Soldiers' Home in Perkins Township. The death record provides additional information that his birth date was 27 Feb 1832 (which does not exactly match the age from the census record) and that his parents were Michael Ryan and Catherine Bankerd. Therefore, it is very likely that the Jacob Ryan in the 1910 US Census from the Soldiers' Home was not the correct Jacob Ryan.

• His obituary was published in the Bryan Democrat on 9 May 1913 in Bryan, OH.

Jacob C. Ryan was born in Colombiana County, Ohio, December 31, 1824 and died at the Soldiers' home in Sandusky, April 30, 1913, aged 88 years and 5 months. The early part of his life was spent in Columbiana and Wayne counties, this state. He enlisted in the army in 1846 and served his country in the war between the United States and Mexico. At the close of the war he was honorably mustered out of service and returned to Wooster, Ohio where on June 1, 1848 he was married to Miss Martha Lightfoot. A short time after their marriage, they moved to Bryan and to this union were born three children, Samantha M., Belinda M., and John L. Ryan. He made his home in this community for nearly sixty-five years. He is the last of his immediate family to answer to the final summons. Some years ago while the Salvation Army were holding meetings in the community he confessed his faith in Christ and enlisted as a good soldier under the Banner of the Cross. After a long life he has responded to the call of heaven and entered into his rest.
