• His obituary was published in the Unknown newspaper in 1924.

W. T. Marshall, a prominent and highly respected citizen of Apple Farm, died at his residence Friday after a prolonged illness. He was widely known in this county and a genuine regret was caused when news of his death was spread.

Mr. Marshall was 78 years of age, having been born in Bath, Virginia, April 6, 1842. (Calhoun County Census of 1900 shows his birth date as 1846). At the outbreak of hostilities between the states he enlisted under the Confederate Flag and served in the Lost Cause valiantly and honorably throughout the four years of internecine strife. Some time after the conclusion of the Civil War, Mr. Marshall joined the regular army and under the flag he had lately fought against, he participated with equal bravery in some of the most thrilling battles against the Indians on the western border. In one of those battles Mr. Marshall was wounded which resulted in his being crippled for life. He was a fine raconteur and many a boy's youthful imagination has been fired and his ambition fixed by the tales told by Mr. Marshall in his little shoe and harness shop in Grantsville.

After Mr. Marshall's return from the west, he married Miss Theodosia Barr, daughter of one of the County's most prominent families, and to them a large family was born. Mrs. Marshall died several years ago; also one daughter, Mrs. Rachel Lurty of Richwood. The following children survive, Mrs. Oak Huffman of Enon, Edward Marshall of Richwood, Mrs. Dwight Wilson of Apple Farm, Mrs. V. S. Stockwell of Richwood, Bill Marshall who is in the regular army in a western state, Mrs. Leone Ziller of Akron, Ohio, Mrs. Hazel Fry of Moatsville, Mrs. Delma Smith of Richwood, and Mrs. Oleta Weaver of Apple Farm.

Funeral services were held at the Old Bethlehem Church Saturday and interment was in the cemetery, the services being in charge of Rev. N. B. Hamrick of the local Baptist Church of which the deceased had long been a member.

Thus ended a well lived life. He devotedly served his country well and honorably; raised a large family of fine children, wronged no man, but so ordered his life that the world was better for his having lived. Peace to his ashes, rest to his soul.
