"Ephriam Hess, born February 7, 1845, married Nancy Melinda Phillips near Antioch, Ohio, who was born April 27, 1844. After the death of her father, her mother with other members of the family became pioneer settlers in Jefferson County, Kansas. At Rock Creek, near Topeka, Kansas, she met Ephriam H. Fast, January 8, 1871, and they were married August 29, 1872. They farmed near Burlington, Kansas. Nancy M. P. Fast was one of the first teachers in the State of Kansas, and taught in a rock constructed schoolhouse in Jefferson County which is said to be still standing. Ephriam was a lay preacher, and held in esteem as an authority on the Bible. He died in April, 1923, she on February 16, 1937. Both are buried at Burlingame, Kansas. Seven children were born to this couple: two dying in childhood, and one at age of thirty-six."
