• His obituary was published in the Unknown Newspaper on 4 May 1910 in West Salem, OH.

Jacob Alfred Keener was born in Jackson township, Ashland county, March 24, 1846, and closed his earthly pilgrimage May 2, 1910, aged 64 years, 1 month and 8 days. Having been in poor health the last four or five years, his life closed after an illness of two days. In 1869 the deceased was married to Eva Keller, whom death took from him January 26, 1887. To this union were born eight children, two of whom--Eva in 1888 and Lorenzo in 1889--left this world to join their mother. Six children remain to mourn their loss;--May Keener, of Cleveland; Alice Canon, of Cleveland; Jennie Valentine, of Cleveland, Iva Canon, of California, Frank Keener, of S. Dakota; and Chas. Keener, of Iowa.

In 1890 Mr. Keener and Miss Mae Belle Riley were united in marriage and to this union was born a daughter, Irene Keener, who with her mother survives the deceased.

Again October 13, 1909, he was married to Miss Ada Thompson, who is widowed by his death. Several years ago he confessed his faith in Christ and was baptized into his Savior in Cleveland. He has been regular in attendance at worship in the Lord's house and has evidenced deep love for the Master. He always lived a temperate life, being marred by no bad habits. He was of even temper and disposition, a good friend and kind neighbor to all. beside the immediate family, he leaves 5 brothers, 2 sisters and 1 aged uncle.

The funeral services were held Wednesday, May 4, in the Methodist Episcopal Church at West Salem, Elder Herman Weatherbee, minister of the church of Christ in Sulllivan, officiating. Interment at West Salem.

---------------------------------------

There are marriage and death documents for a George H. Keener born 4 Jul 1877 which show his parents as Jacob A. Keener and May/Mary B. Riley. However, I believe that George was the son of Mae Belle Riley's 1st marriage with her husband's name not yet known. It appears that when Jacob and Mae Belle were first married in 1890, her 2 children (and her mother) moved in with Jacob. There may or may not have been a legal adoption of those 2 children by Jacob but the 1900 US Census shows her 1 daughter's name as Prien J. Keener.

This is further re-enforced by the birth location of George being shown as in New York state which is where Mae Belle's mother was from and with Mae Belle being born in New Jersey.
