bullet  General Notes:

Sarah was married 3 times. Her first husband was Jonathan Johnson and was they married sometime before 1860 probably in Tennessee.

Her second husband was Jacob Gabriel Peavler, born 27 May 1834 in Sullivan County, Tennessee. They were married 27 Oct 1861 in Franklin County, Arkansas. She was known as "the lady with the black bag" for her work as a volunteer nurse for the Confederate Army during the Civil War. She reported followed Gabriel during the war and tended to the wounded after each battle. In 1870 she appears with Jacob Gabriel Peavler on the US Census in Lampasas County, Texas along with John Clay, an adopted 9 year old son. She had two other biological children with Jacob Gabriel Peavler, Sarah Frances Peavler, b. 4 Feb 1872 in Menardsville, Texas and Margaret Virginia Peavler, b. 16 Jun 1875 also in Menardsville.

Her third husband was Jacob Lightfoot. There is yet no record of the marriage which would have occurred sometime around 1879. Sarah brought into the marriage her two daughters from her previous marriage with Jacob Peavler. Both daughters were un-officially adopted by Jacob Lightfoot and they grew up using the Lightfoot surname for their entire lives. Additionally, Jacob Lightfoot and Sarah also un-officially adopted an 11-day old boy, John Wood Brandis, and he grew up using only the Lightfoot surname. Jacob Lightfoot apparently never father any children of his own.

bullet  Marriage Notes:

Jacob and Sarah never had any children of their own. Sarah had brought her two daughters from her previous marriage to Jacob Peavler. In late 1880, they un-officially adopted an 11-day old infant, John Wood Brandis.
-------------------------------------

For the 1900 US Census in the Lower Gila Valley, Grant County, New Mexico Territory, Jacob was living at the home of his married "adopted" son, John Wood Brandis who used the Lightfoot surname along with John's wife, Dora. Meanwhile, Jacob's wife, Sarah, was living at the next home on the census form with her married daughter, Sarah Francis and her family. It is not known just how close these 2 homes were to each other.

It is interesting to note that on the 1900 US Census form, Sarah indicated that she had been married for about 10 years instead of the expected 20 years. Meanwhile, Jacob had indicated on his enumeration that he had been married for 21 years which would place their marriage date at about the expected 1879. The 10 year figure for Sarah is probably an enumerator error as it duplicates the marriage years for the head of that household, Robert Herrell and his wife, Sarah Francis Peavler.
------------------------------------

Sarah and Jacob Lightfoot are both buried in the Rodeo, NM cemetery. No marker was put on their graves and when Margaret Virginia Lacy's children went to make arrangements to have one put there, they could not locate the graves. The early records for the cemetery have been lost. John Hancock and Margaret Virginia Lacy are both buried in the Lordsburg, NM cemetery and there is a marker on their graves.
