The Funeral Services for John A. Frederick, July 22, 2002

I am sorry for the rushed message I sent as I got the word regarding the death of dad Frederick. Mary's dad turned worse quickly, going from an object of general concern to immediate urgent action. Back pain led to hospital confinement and a question of bowel obstruction to some form of advanced cancer. Conclusion: advanced prostate cancer. Age and general health conditions led to decision to keep him comfortable and make no serious attack on the cancer. After a week of hospitalization with many tests, he was released on Sunday to Hospice home care to start on Monday. Monday evening he requested and received and enjoyed a fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy dinner. He had not been eating nor drinking as he should, so this was viewed with gladness. Evidently he suffered a stroke during the night Monday. On Tuesday, his speech was garbled and he had a crooked smile. On Wed, Mary flew home to be with him. She was able to hold his hand and talk with him. He would slurp water as it was given to him by spoon and squeeze her hand on request. Thursday morning, the children all gathered around the bedside. Mary's brother, Loyal, tested his father's pulse and thought there was none. Closer evaluation indicated he was still breathing faintly. In the ensuing moments as each was trying to determine that he was still doing all right, it became clear he had in fact quit breathing. It was special for the four siblings to stand together holding hands as Mary and Sarah led in a prayer of thanksgiving. Then all four joined in singing Amazing Grace and How Great Thou Art. It was a wonderful release from the bonds of earth with its pain and suffering that John had endured for two weeks short of ninety-three years. There was no fear, no panic, just a quiet slipping away from the dock for the last ride in his sail to glory. Bon Voyage!

A large number of friends came to the public viewing on Sunday, July 21 and funeral services at the New Life Baptist Church on Monday, July 22 at 1 1:00 AM, with interment at the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens following. Russ Kaufman conducted the service for his father-in-law using 1Peter 1:22- 25 as his text. He emphasized the Brevity of Life, the characteristics of Life that give it significance and the Potential for Life available for all through faith in Jesus Christ. As a family, we decided that the service was to be a celebration of a life. Mary and her sister Sarah, who sang together as children to the delight of the parents, joined together again for the service singing The Old Rugged Cross and Oh Happy Day! Grandsons Jeff and Mike Bailey, Randy Banghart, Butch Frederick and John and Carey Frederick, served as pallbearers.

The New Life Baptist Church, on US 20 in Osceola, Indiana, the church of Sarah and her family, graciously allowed use of the facility for the service and provided a delicious and generous ham dinner with all the fixings through wonderful desserts after the service.

John's 96 year old sister, Violet, visited with him on his final Sunday afternoon after he came home from the hospital, and now awaits her turn to sail into eternity as the final family member of that generation. She attended the Sunday viewing and the services Monday with an ample and energetic display of the longevity that has been assigned the Frederick family, while her 74 year old daughter, Katherine, underwent surgery early the same morning to remove a length of her colon containing cancerous tumors.

After flying Mary to Indiana, Russ waited until the call regarding the death before he drove to Indiana, taking 12 hours arriving at midnight. After the services on Monday, Mary and I went to Michigan to spend two nights with Charissa and her family. Grandparents enjoyed the time with the two Klopfenstein kids, Grant and Calen. Grandpa took the kids fishing at the pond on Tuesday afternoon. Two other neighborhood playmates joined us for a frolicking fishing time. A severe thunderstorm on Monday night turned the weather from hot and sticky to cool and comfortable. In two nights of Aggravation, the males did their share of winning but I hesitate to boast. On Wednesday, we returned to Gothenburg. I awakened at 2:30 A .M. and felt it was not worth going back to sleep for an hour, so I showered, stirred Mary, loaded the car and by 3:15 we were on the road. We had to stop in Indiana for a final good bye to Violet, Mary's youngest sister who had been staying with her father attending to his needs the past 6 months. We got on the toll road, I-80, and headed west. At 8:45 PM, we drove into the First Baptist Church parsonage garage, our "home" in Gothenburg, Nebraska.
