Jedediah Sayre was born 01 June 1772 in Maryland according to his death record and the 1850 Census. He married 23 March 1797 Elizabeth Weaver, a daughter of Henry Sr. and Catherine (Fast) Weaver. Jedediah had made his settlement on Pleasant Creek, then part of Harrison, started his family by the time his parents, brothers and sisters decided to move to the Letart area, settling both the Ohio side and the western Virginia side of the Ohio River. Hardesty's "History of Barbour County", published in 1883, insists that Jedediah was about the 10th settler on Pleasant Creek. Some family records indicate that David Sayre was the first to live on Pleasant Creek, but no confirmation other than his deeding of the land to Jedediah has been found. Jedediah added 600 acres to the property in 1824. Jedediah was an accomplished gunsmith and blacksmith. His leadership in the Pleasant Creek community attests to the fact that he was an industrious man, and one of some education and generosity. He fabricated many useful articles and implements which were vital and necessary to pioneer life. He instructed children of the early settlers in the rudiments of education and eventually helped establish a subscription school. Intensely religious, like many of the early pioneers, Jedediah was chosen exhorter and class leader by the people of the Methodist Episcopal denomination, and he conducted services in the settlement. When growth in the settlement made it now longer feasible to conduct worship in the clearings and in private homes, it became desirable to provide a common shelter for worship. In the year 1800, Jedediah Sayre gave one acre of land on which to build a "Meetin' House". In 1822, the people of the community needed a larger church. At that time, Mr. Sayre gave a deed for the land to the trustees of the "Pleasant Creek Methodist Episcopal Church."
Some researchers show his birth location as Elizabeth, Union County, New Jersey. ![]()
