Jesse appears to have had 3 wives. His first wife was Phebe who died young and was buried at Saint Lukes Cemetery, Ashland County, Ohio. Her gravestone indicates "SIMMONS - Phebe w/o Jesse died Dec. 12, 1844 age 27y 9m 17d". They had at least 2 children, Harvey, b. abt 1839, and Sarah A., b. abt 1842. These two children appear on the 1850 US Census with Jesse and their new stepmother, Jemima Fast.

His second wife, Jemima Fast, was first shown with him in the 1850 US Census. They had at least 9 children who appear together with the parents in the 1850 and 1860 US Census. Jemima died in 1861 and was buried in Nova Cemetery: "Simmons - Jemima 1829 - 1862".

Jesse was remarried to his third wife, Effie J. Andrews, and they were first shown in the 1870 US Census with 5 older children from Jemima Fast and 2 children from Effie. She was buried in Nova Cemetery: "Simmons - Effie J. Andrews w/o Jesse 1830 - 1911".
