bullet  General Notes:

Charles Otto Redd was the uncle of Robert Eugene Redd. Charles and his wife Mabel (Souders) lived in Detroit, Michigan. He was rumored to have connections with the Detroit mob. He had a "speakeasy"(an establishment in which liquor was sold illegally)during the prohibition days with a back room where gambling went on. Robert Eugene Redd remembers riding the train with his parents, Charlotte and Robert Russell Redd, to Detroit in the 1920's for a visit with Uncle Charles and Aunt Mabel. They visited the speakeasy in the evening for dinner. They had to ring a bell outside and someone inside would slide a small door panel open to see who was at the door before they were let in. At that time the bars had free food on one end - boiled eggs, meat, pickles, crackers, bread, and other finger food.

In December 1937, Charles was supposed to have stepped out of a car, slipped on the ice and broke his leg. That story proved very doubtful. When Charles died the details of his death were not disclosed, but the story his mother, brothers and sisters told, was that his death was mob connected. When the family viewed the body, they said they saw a bullet hole behind his ear. This information came from Fay (Rodman) Hadley.

Additional news given 2/25/90

Charles Redd died between Christmas and New Years. He was going up to Northern Michigan when his car hit an icy spot, went out of control, skidded on the ice, and wrapped itself around a tree. He was killed instantly. The car was a complete wreck. When the New Year was ringing in, Mable, Charles' wife, was waiting at the Union Station in Columbus, Ohio to bring Charles' body back to Logan, Ohio for burial. (This information furnished by Della E. Cave, sister of Mabel Souders Redd.)
