Although a few researchers indicate that date of death of John Copus as 19 March 1877, obviously referencing this death notice, there is great reason to believe that this is not the same person. First notice that the given names are not the same: James instead of John. Secondly notice that this death record indicates a birth location of Wood County, Ohio instead of Ashland County, Ohio. There are no records of John Copus ever being in Wood County, Ohio. Thirdly, a daughter named Deaisy was born in 1878 in Richland County, Ohio. And lastly, this death record indicates that this person was single yet we know that John Copus had been married to Margaret Sackman for the past 14 years.

The fact that Margaret did not remarry until 1893 suggests a more likely date of death of around 1885-1890. If John did die much earlier such as 1878, then it is possible that Margaret remained a widow for approximately 15 years. But if she were only 31 years old at the time, it seems unlikely that she would wait that long before remarrying.
