April 20, 1935: Charles was killed when he was driving a tractor and plow across a homemade bridge on the ranch, just west of the old white house. Mom said that either the bridge collapsed under the weight of the tractor or more likely, that part of the plow caught a part of the bridge thus bringing it down while Charles was on it. One of the stringers flew up striking him in the head, killing him. While Jennie and the family stayed in the town (red house) house and were making arrangements, mortgage holders from the bank came to the ranch and obtained the signature of James Nelson (Charles' dad) on papers that essentially signed the ranch away. At the time, James did not realize what he was signing. When he learned later that the ranch was gone, he was beside himself. He and Laura were allowed by the Dougherty's (the new owners) to live for the duration of their life in the old white house on the ranch.
