Some researchers show that he died in July 1850 and was buried at Christ Reformed Church Cemetery in Middletown, Frederick County, Maryland, yet there is no visible gravestone to be found. There is an entry in the US Census Mortality Schedule for 1850 for a George Shafer at age 1 but that entry was from Carroll County, Maryland instead of Frederick County, Maryland where the family lived.
He was not listed with the family on the 1860 US Census when he would have been about 11 years old.
Other researchers show that he was married and had at least one daughter. There is a 1880 US Census and a 1910 US census record that closely resembles him. Each shows a different wife. There were multiple Shafer families in Frederick County and at least 2 George Shafers born in 1849 so knowing for sure which was him is difficult.
