The Cattle Raisers' Association of Texas was organized in February 1877, at Graham, Texas. T. L. Carter of Palo Pinto county was elected its first president, and was re-elected each succeeding years except one up to the time of his death in July, 1888. The term which he did not serve he was nominated for, but requested that he be allowed to retire, and that it be filled by Colonel C. C. Slaughter, who was elected to take his place in March 1885. Colonel Slaughter served as president one year. At the annual meeting in 1886 Colonel Carter was again chosen president by acclamation without a dissenting vote and was president when he died.

After the death of President Carter, A. P. Bush, Jr., of Colorado, Texas, was elected each year to fill the position up to March, 1899. At the annual meeting of that year Mr. Bush declined re-election and J. R. Kleburg was elected. Mr. Kleburg was re-elected at the meeting of 1900 and served for two years.

Murdo MacKenzie was elected president at the meeting of 1901, and was re-elected the next year serving the two year limit under the by-laws.

At the annual meeting in March, 1905, W. W. Turney was elected.
