Sanford Layton Perry
(1844-1905) |
|
Sanford Layton Perry 1 2 4 5
- Born: May 1844, Kentucky 3 4 5
- Marriage (1): Margaret Ann Arnspiger on 24 December 1867 1 2 3
- Died: 25 July 1905 at age 61
Other names for Sanford were Leighton Perry 6 and Stanford Layton Perry.3
General Notes:
Following the death of his first wife, Margaret Arnspiger, Sanford remarried in 1888 to Jennie P. (Unknown) and they had at least one child, named John Perry. At the same time, Sanford appears in the 1880 US Census as widowed and living with 2 sons. There is some suggestion by at least one other researcher that Jennie's surname was also Arnspiger. -----------------------------------
Noted events in his life were:
• He has alternate birth information of 26 December 1843.
• He appeared on the 1880 US Census in Stamping Ground, Scott County, KY on 29 June 1880. 6

(Sanford was widowed and living with 2 sons.)
NOTE - If Sanford's birth date was in May 1844, then his age should have been 36 instead of 35. Supposedly his oldest son, Leonaidas, lived until 1953 but his name does not appear on this 1880 census when he would have been only about 10 years old. .
• He appeared on the 1900 US Census in Stamping Ground, Scott County, KY on 13 June 1900. 5

(Sanford was living with 2nd wife and son at the home of his brother, Alfonzo.)
NOTE - There is a question about John Perry who was shown on this census to be born in May 1891 which supposedly means he was born to the 2nd wife, Jennie, instead of the 1st wife, Margaret Ann Arnspiger. The problem is that Sanford already had a son named John that was born in 1872. Did that son die and a new son with his 2nd wife was given the same name?
.
Sanford married Margaret Ann Arnspiger, daughter of Samuel D. Arnspiger and Sarah Frances Hoover, on 24 December 1867.1 2 3 (Margaret Ann Arnspiger was born on 13 July 1845 in Kentucky 3 4 7 8 9 and died on 26 December 1873 1 3 10.)
Marriage Notes:
There is a lot of confusion surrounding Sanford Layton Perry. The name of his 2nd wife is not known with any certainty. Some researchers claim it was Jennie Arnspiger. She appears with the James S. Perry family in the 1880 census at the age of 26 and a birth year of about 1854.
In the 1900 US Census, Sanford is shown with his 2nd wife, Jennie P. born in March 1859. They were married about 1888. I can find no documentation about the marriage so the surname of Jennie remains unknown.
The burial location of Sanford seems equally confusing. There is a memorial page at Find-A-Grave (Memorial 85199655) for Sanford, his 1st wife Margaret Ann Arnspiger and 2 children, Leonaidas and John. Those graves are located at the Masonic Cemetery at Stamping Ground, Scott County, Kentucky. There is a photograph of a gravestone that shows their names as well as the birth and death dates for all four.
However, there is another Find-A-Grave Memorial (Memorial 118512232) for Sanford, his 1st wife Margaret, and the son John at the very small Alsop-Perry Family Cemetery in nearby Skinnersburg in Scott County, Kentucky. This memorial page shows a photo of the gravesite area surrounded by a fence and one tall, obelisk gravestone is visible. Unfortunately there are no close up photos of the gravestone to know what is written on it. ---------------------------------------------
