bullet  General Notes:

LEWISTON NEWSIE HIT BY AUTO, LEG BROKEN

Robert Vose, 15 year old Republican-Herald carrier boy at Lewiston, had two bones in his right leg broken Sunday afternoon when he was struck by a passing automobile. He was about to leap to the running board of a car driven by Eal Blanchard, a Lewiston youth. The boys were returning from a visit to the swimming hole near the arches in Stockton valley.

The Blanchard car was standing at the side of the road and the boys were about to return to Lewiston. Vose was crossing the road, which was wet and slippery, and intended to reach the waiting car before the approaching machine, driven by Gary Milde, a teller in the First State Bank at Lewiston, accompanied by Otto Hicks, cashier of the bank and owner of the machine, passed Vose slipped, however, just as he was about to jump to the running board of the car, and the Hicks machine struck him. He was picked up and taken to Lewiston immediately. Attending physicians stated today that the lad would be unable to be about for a period of about six weeks.

Once left wife for several years during Great Depression to work on farms in South Dakota. Lived in Elroy, Wisconsin, Onalaska, Wisconsin, Winona, Minnesota, and then moved to Daggett, California where he worked as a stationmaster for railroad. Once threw the wrong switch in the RR depot, causing train accident (due to drunkenness).

"Bob Vose had a very stern personality... seldom smiled. My aunt Marie always seemed uneasy around him. Once when I was young and visiting Bob and Marie, we were washing dishes when Marie looked out the window and said, "Oh my God, here comes Bob (home from work)... we'd better get busy and get this house cleaned up."

"On another occasion when dad (Robert Westphal) and I were visiting Bob and Marie in Dagget, California, I asked Bob (Vose) to borrow some books, as he was an avid reader. He told me, "Well, you can borrow a few, but I'd better well get them back!" Even though I was older at the time, I still felt very uneasy around him. He had a bad temper. I think he may have also been abusive to Marie."
