13 Mrs. Mary Ann Keeffe, 84, died at her home Tuesday at 1 AM after an illness of three weeks.

As Mary Ann Shay she was born in Ireland Feb. 25, 1862, the daughter of Patrick and Ann Shay. She came to America at the age of one year, locating at Ettrick. She was married February 25, 1882 to Edmund Keeffe and since that time has lived in the Trempealeau vicinity. Her husband died December 1, 1919.

Mrs. Keeffe is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Arthur Wardwell, Trempealeau, Sister M. Eileen, Washington D.C.; and three sons, Patrick of Adams, Edmund Jr. of Madison, and Mark of San Antonio, Tex.

Funeral services will be conducted at Saint Bartholomew's church Thursday at 11 AM with the Rev. John Murphy officiating. Burial will be in the Catholic cemetery. The service will follow one held at 9 AM for her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Frances Joanna Keeffe.

10 Mrs. Frances Keefe, Mrs. Mary Keefe of Trempealeau Dead

Two Trempealeau women, Mrs Frances Keefe, 58, and her mother-in-law, Mrs. Mary Ann Keefe, 83, died at their homes here early this week. Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Bartholomew's church for Mrs. Frances Keefe and at the same hour Friday for Mrs. Mary Ann Keefe. The Rev. John Murphy will officiate at both services and both will be buried at the church cemetery.

Mrs. Frances Keefe died at 1 a.m. Monday after a heart attack. Her mother-in-law died Tuesday at 1 a.m. after a three-week illness.

Mrs Mary Keefe was born in Ireland February 25, 1862, the former Mary Ann Shay. With her parents, Patrick and Ann Shay, she came to the United States at the age of one. The family settled in Ettrick, Wis., and she lived there 19 years until her marriage to Edmund Keefe at La Crosse February 25, 1884. The couple made their home in Trempealeau where she had since resided. Her husband died December 1, 1919.

Survivors are five children and several grandchildren. The children are Sister Eileen, Washington, D.C.; Patrick, Adams, Wis.; Margaret, Trempealeau; Edmund, Madison, Wis.; and Mark, San Antonio, Texas. A son, Michael, is dead.

Mrs. Frances Keefe, the former Frances Joanna James, was born October 23, 1887, on the James home farm in the town of Caledonia, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. P. James. She graduated from Trempealeau High School in 1906 and was married to Michael Keefe in 1912. The couple had four children, two of whom died in infancy. Her husband died January 1, 1935.

She worked at the post office here for some time before her death.

Survivors are the two children, James and Joan; three grandchildren; a brother, Harry James, and three sisters, Mrs. Ernest Gibbs, Mrs. William Ryder, and Mrs. John Thomton, all of Trempealeau.

Her gravestone is a small rose colored flat marble monument which says "Mary A. Keeffe 1862-1946". Note that the last name is spelled with two letter "F"s (Keeffe instead of Keefe) while her husband's grave spells the surname as Keefe. Several members of the Keefe line spelled the last name with two "F"s.
